Barrow Offshore Wind Farm Approval (12/03/03)

The Government has approved an application for a 108 MWe wind farm to be built in the Irish Sea eight miles to the Southwest of Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria.

The development will be the first offshore wind farm in Cumbria and consist of 30 wind turbines, providing enough green electricity for up to 87,000 homes.  Work on the development is scheduled to begin next winter for completion by the summer of 2003.

Minister for Energy Brian Wilson said:

"Wind farms like this will play an important part in meeting the targets set out in the Government's Energy White Paper: a 60% carbon reduction by 2050 and 20% electricity from renewables by 2020"
